9 side hustles to make you money!

I know working at home can be tough to get into, especially when you’re new to the whole “work at home” life.
So, if you’re not ready to dive in head first to the full-time work at home life, there are some things you can start doing as a side hustle to make a little extra income.

Baking –
If you have any baking talent, this is a great way to make some side income. Start by offering your cakes, pastries, cookies, or cupcakes to friends and family. Tell them to spread the word. Make a free Facebook page, and start promoting your baked goods.

A true story that happened to a friend of mine – She did this exact thing. She was a teacher, and on weekends she would bake for friends and family. After a while, she got very well known by all the school moms and staff. Her cakes and cupcakes were everyone’s favorite. Pretty soon, she started a Facebook page and was starting to book orders weekly. Then daily, then she got to the point where she could no longer work full time as a teacher. So, she quit teaching, opened up a small bakery in town and is one of the top-ranked ones. So, these side jobs can sometimes turn into more if you work it!

Cooking –
Very similar to the baking, you can start cooking dishes for those in need. This is great for those disabled people who can’t get out of the house and want a home-cooked meal. My next-door neighbor makes the best tamale’s and every few months, she posts on the Facebook groups that she’s selling them. It’s a great way to make a few hundred bucks fast.

Another true story – A friend from my church has a catering business now. She cooks wonderful dishes for parties, or just for your family. Instead of calling out for pizza, call her and she will deliver a fresh yummy home-cooked meal. It’s a win-win, and that is her full-time job now! She was even invited to speak on a Christian TV show about her success!

Consignment –
I know I touched on selling stuff in another post, but doing consignment is a great way to make extra money while purging all the old stuff that no longer fits. If you have kids, this is even better because kid stuff sells rather quickly. If you keep the toys and clothes in good condition you can get a good price for it at these places. I have gone to a bunch since I have three kids, and even maternity clothes sell great at these events.

True story- A friend of mine has made a successful business from putting together these sales three times a year, and not only is this her only job, but she has been able to help those in need around our community. It’s been a great blessing to the town, and we all look forward to the sales.

Crafts –
If you’re a crafty person, then there is a lot of wonderful things you can do to make extra money. Make jewelry, and sell it on Etsy. Also, knitting has become very popular. If you can knit a hat, scarf or doll, these things go for a high price. As a matter of fact, I bought both my daughters custom made crochet dolls. They love them and have had them for over three years now. I paid about $35 for each doll and to be honest, I feel it was well worth it.

If you can make anything pretty or unique, then why not sell it. Today is the day my friends. We live in the best time ever to make a profit with our passions and talents. Make that thing you love and sell it. This even goes for furniture and big items. If you can build it, someone will buy it!

Art –
I for one love to look at art. I don’t have an artistic bone in my body, but I buy art all the time. My bookshelf is filled with books of my favorite artist work.

If you are gifted with the ability to make art, then get on these online sites and sell it. These days you have places like Twitch, where you get viewers to pay you just to watch you draw or paint!

This is a perfect time to be an artist. There are so many people needing illustrations for their books, blogs, and even logos for their business. If you have the ability to make art, then you have a huge advantage.

True story – I know of a teenage girl who has started a business drawing flash art for tattoo places. She is seventeen years old and makes extra money after school, drawing. What a great way for her to use her time to get paid. I mean, she would have been drawing in her free time anyway, but now she gets paid to do it!

Writing –
I know I talk about freelance writing a lot, but hey, it’s how I got started and writing is my passion. I may not be able to draw or do crafts but I can write!

Writing is how I helped support my family for three years. Now, if you’re not ready to be at home full time, and still want to work, then you can get some side gigs by writing.

Places like Craigslist, and even Indeed post gigs for writers all the time. If you have a pretty good grasp on grammar, then why not write a few articles a week on a subject you enjoy. You might get $25 for a few hours of work.

I loved my time as a freelance writer, as a matter of fact, I’m still currently doing it very part-time. Just wrote a review for an e-book that is being published. Even though I may no longer be a full-time freelance writer, as you can tell by my blog, I still write all the time!

There are a lot of places to get writing gigs and if you’d like to dig deeper into Freelance Writing, check out my blog post on all things writing!

Music –
People love to be entertained. With YouTube and other social media, your talents can be heard all around the world. You no longer have to play in bars to get an audience. Now you post a video and millions of people are listening to you.

I love to sing, and if I was not so darn scared I might make a few videos myself. Stage fright takes over and I can’t handle the nerves.

No matter what your talents are, get them out so the world can see, and ignore the haters because to quote Taylor Swift “people throw rocks at things that shine”.

If you have the nerve, try out for one of those TV shows. America’s Got Talent, Britain’s got talent, American Idol, The Voice, The X Factor. There are so many to choose from. Get your videos on the web, get a following, and start making music!

Gaming –
Yes, you can even make money gaming. Because of Twitch and their patron program now you can play your favorite video games and get paid to do it. Now, it’s not as easy as just playing, no, you have to be entertaining. You have to keep people engaged in your gameplay, and you have to make them want to come back each week for your episodes.

It’s like any business. You have to be consistent and it will take time to get followers, but once you get those followers, they will pay you to see more.

True Story – I was watching a girl play my favorite PC game, and at the time, I watched, I want to say it was about thirty minutes, she made two thousand dollars. That’s more then I make at my day job in a week. On Twitch it shows on the screen each time someone donates, and I was in shock! She has been on Twitch for over a year now, but it still amazes me!

E-Books –
I know this is touching on writing, but if you are knowledgeable on a subject, and know you can help someone with that knowledge, why not write it down? I know so many people who make a paycheck each month from their book sales. It may only be a few extra dollars but, money is money. I know how excited they get when the check ends up being a few hundred dollars.

True story – My cousin has a few e-books out. She makes consistent income from them each month. Sometimes it’s thirty dollars, and sometimes more. But, I remember one day my cousin was struggling and was not sure how she was going to cover bills that month. She called me so excited because her e-books made her $300 that month! That’s a few bills right there.

I am also working on a few e-books just for all of you. So, I will be joining the e-book club very soon. If you’d like to get info for my e-books, don’t forget to subscribe to my mailing list.

Good Luck

These are just a few things you can do to help make extra income while keeping your day job. Side hustles are a great way to get that little extra that you could use for an unexpected expense or the bill you were not sure how was going to get paid.

Side hustles have been helping my family stay afloat for many years now. I only touched on a few of the things that have worked for people I know or have worked for me. There are many others out there, and I’ll be posting more later on.

I always love to hear from you so feel free to find me on Social Media. You can see all that info on my About Me Page!

What is a vision board and why do you need one?

What is a vision board and why do you need one?

A vision board or sometimes known as a Dream board is a tool to help you organize and visualize a specific goal or focus for the next year. It is literally a board that you display images on that represent what you want to accomplish in your future. Or what you’d like to have in your future.

Say for instance you want to own a house next year, then you’d get a magazine and cut out the house you want and put it on this dream board. In all honesty, I’ve never had a vision board, but many very successful people do. Hence why this year I am following the trend and getting on this vision dream wagon!

Why do these vision boards work?

The truth is when you visualize something, it creates a positive wave of energy that goes into the atmosphere. If you ever get a chance to read or watch the popular movie “The Secret” it tells you how this magnificent energy works and how it’s the most powerful brain exercise you can do! Put your vision board somewhere that you will see it numerous times a day. Perhaps above your computer, or in your room. This is going to make you see and think about your dreams and goals all day long. Not only that, but your family will also see it, and they will be watching when you get to check things off your list. Maybe you will have a goal to go to that big convention to meet someone you look up to or earn more income. With each goal you accomplish, you mark it off. The dream board is going to keep your brain focused on your end goal.

How do you make a dream/vision board?

There is really no right or wrong way to do this. I have seen some really fancy ones in frames, and then I’ve seen some done on a poster board. Really it’s all up to you how you make it, but here is what I am going to do for mine.

  1. Buy a white poster board (the ones used for science fair projects).
  2. Find some magazines.
  3. Write down my goals and vision for 2018. Some of mine include Write a book, Make enough money blogging that I can quit my full-time job, have more time for my family, be able to hire a house cleaner and build on to our house.
  4. Find photos in the magazines or online to match my goals. Mine will look something like this…

  1. Once I get all my dreams and goals onto this poster board, I will then put it up on display for all to see. I am putting mine in my bedroom next to my dresser so that I will see it 1st thing in the morning when I wake up and anytime I go into my room throughout the day, and again see it right before I go to bed.
  2. Now I have to make these goals a reality by executing them. How will I make money blogging? I have to monetize my blog, get more traffic, and get engagement from readers. Just because you have the images on the board does not mean all of them will just happen. You have to work for it. You have to take matters into your own hands and make things happen. Have a clear end goal. If you get in an Uber car and the driver says where are we going, then you say I have no clue, you won’t get anywhere! You have to make the decision to go somewhere before you get in the car and know where you are heading. Be confident in what you want, know that you can achieve it.
  3. Make it happen. As each goal gets accomplished, I am going to put a red line with a marker through it, so that I know it’s been checked off my list. I am excited just thinking about making these goals happen, aren’t you?
  4. Keep a journal. I love to write and the reason I’ve never done a vision board in the past is that I always write my goals down instead. However, there is one flaw with just writing and not having the visuals. I forget things. We are a family of 5. I have 3 kids, 4 dogs, 9 lizards, I work at home full-time and run around with the kids after school! When I write it down, yes I have it for future use, but I don’t always remember what I wrote down, nor do I remember to look at what I wrote. It is cool however when I find something I wrote years ago and find that a lot of those dreams and goals have come to pass but because I never had a vision board, years would go by before I realized I accomplished that goal. However, I am still a strong believer in the written word. Writing is very therapeutic to me and has gotten me through many hard times in life. Plus when you write something down your brain will focus on what you are writing more intently. I am talking pencil to paper writing, not tablets, notepads, and computers. Get a pad of paper, and write! I suggest that after you get your vision board on display, you start writing down your journey to get there. Perhaps it’s just positive notes to yourself like, “You will lose 10 pounds by the end of the month”, or “today you will get new engagement on your blog”. If that seems a little weird to you or maybe you can’t write yourself love notes just yet, just write what you did that day to help make your goal happen instead. Like for instance, “today I signed up for a blogging course online to help me reach my end goal of quitting my full-time job to be a blogging momma”.

The 1st thing you have to do is spend some time alone in a quiet place, and dig deep. Ask yourself what you want to happen next year. Maybe it’s not a career change, maybe you want more time with your husband/wife or kids, maybe it’s to go on a vacation, or buy a new car. Your goals are not going to be mine, so close your eyes, see yourself taking that Disney vacation, or going on a cruise, or meeting the man/women of your dreams. See it in your head and start making a list. Once you have your list and your end goal… Make your vision board.

I would love to see them once they are all done. Feel free to email them to SheenaDiane@gmail.com & I will add them to this post. Also, I will attach a link to my podcast on this subject. See you soon!

So you want to work from home?

With the rat race of traffic, tolls, people, and cost of childcare, working remotely is becoming more popular than ever. It not only benefits the stay at home mom or dad, but it is a win for your employer as well. They get the same amount of work without the overhead of having to add a desk, drug test, and have a lower overhead cost. For the right person working from home can increase their productivity and overall well being. Meaning some people are happier when working from home, which in return produces more business, better customer service, and overall a better employee!

So, Now that you’ve decided that you are ready to jump headfirst into the work at home community, what do you do next?

Finding these opportunities is not always easy, and if you go to the wrong places you could find yourself falling for scams. Believe me, I’ve done it. So here are  10 things you need to know before jumping in head first to this type of career.

  1. Research – You have to really take some time to research the company or the job you are thinking of getting. There are so many fake get rich quick things out there that you can’t trust anyone until you have done your homework.
  2. Your passion – This may seem like a no-brainer but there are actually a ton of jobs you can do from home, so knowing what it is that makes you happy to go to work is what you should be focusing on. For me, I am a huge people person & am great with sales, so when I got a transcription job doing insurance claims I hated it. Why? Because I was listening to a recording all day, never talking to anyone and it was not for me. I started to dread putting on my headphones. Now I work in marketing and sales & I love it & look forward to turning on my laptop for work each day!
  3. Facebook groups – It may seem like a normal thing to log onto Facebook and go looking for groups that offer advice on jobs at home, but from experience, the only thing I ever got from any of those groups were links to click on a landing page and sign up to make someone else rich. It will only bring you confusion, frustration, and scams. I actually had a lady ask me for my name, birthday, and address on private message because she said she was doing a job interview with me at 10 PM on Facebook? I said, lady, I am not giving you any of my info then reported her to Facebook. She was banned after that for trying to steal people’s information. Just be careful, and use good judgment. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is, and if someone is asking you for personal info on Facebook, never fall for it!
  4. Indeed & Monster – Once you find what you like to do now you can go job searching, I have had a lot of success using the keyword Remote jobs in Indeed & Monster. If you would like to work in Customer Service, for instance, you would look for “Remote Customer Service jobs”.
  5. Be your own boss – If the thought of working for someone else is not your cup of tea, that’s okay. You can find a lot of jobs that you can do on your own. I have been working as a Freelance Writer for many years & still do it occasionally. I did it as a side hustle so never made it a full-time job, but if you put in the work you can make it a full-time income. There are a lot of other things you can do on your own as well, and we can get into those in another post. Or you can always ask me if you want to know something specific.
  6. Balance – This is something I had to learn the hard way. If you have kids and are going to work from home you have got to learn to balance your time. I still struggle with this one, but I have come up with a system that works for me & helps me to get my work done, pick up my girls from school, have time to be with my two-year-old son, make dinner, help with homework, and do all the after school activities. One thing that works for me is alarms. I set alarms on my phone for lunchtime, this is so I won’t get so caught up with work that I forget to feed the baby and myself. I put alarms on my phone for every task I need to do throughout the day so that I can be sure to get everything done. I have also found little things that help me be more productive, but I can go into more detail in another post.
  7. Distractions – I had no idea just how many distractions I would face being a work at home mom. Being I have a two-year-old home with me while I work you might hear crying in the background while I make that important business call. The dogs start barking when I am trying to close a sale, the doorbell rings.. the list goes on and on. Dealing with distractions is a huge struggle to me. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram & Pinterest, sure does look nice after answering emails for the last twenty minutes. Or the TV has been off for a while, let me see if my show is on! Nope… don’t do it. That five-minute break turns into an hour and then you end up getting behind. Keeping your head focused and on track is a huge hurdle in the work at home life. I can give you some tips and tricks that have helped me overcome some of these distractions in another post.
  8. Keywords – There are many ways to find jobs you can do from home & a great tool to start with is Search Engines. I use Google for my keywords and it always gave me great success at finding side jobs here and there. Going back to the freelance writing career, I used the keywords ‘Write for pay” or “paid writers”. This would bring up things that were paying people to write. I actually found one of my favorite writing jobs this way. I found a pet sitting blog that needed a writer to give her weekly articles on pet related things. This was perfect for me because I am a former Veterinary Technician and had a lot of knowledge on this subject. If you were looking for transcription work, for example, you’d want to search out “Insurance transcription jobs”, or “movie subtitle transcription work”. These types of keywords can help narrow down your searches. Plus you can find a ton of YouTube videos on your given interest and the best keywords to find that particular job!
  9. Direct Sales – A lot of people have asked me if direct sale or MLM (multi-level marketing) businesses are worth it and being I have done my fair share, I can give you my honest opinion on them. I have sold Avon, Mary Kay, Mark, Juice Plus, Jamberry nails & Scentsy. When I first started selling these I did make money. Not a lot but enough to cover the products I wanted to buy & to keep my website going. If you are really serious about making these businesses work you absolutely can be successful doing so. However, you have to have a solid base of friends & family that can help you get started, then after that, it’s up to you to grind & hustle to get new customers each week. If you don’t have a solid network of friends or customers then these type of businesses will fail rather quickly. Each one has its own set of rules and amount you have to make in sales each month to continue selling their products. When the sales slow down, you end up paying out of pocket to keep the business going & it quickly turns into a money taker, rather than a money maker. Yes, It can be done & I have many friends who have climbed up to the top of these ladders, love their jobs, have a great team under them & make a great living doing this. It takes effort & time to make this type of job a successful one. I did not have enough drive to make it work for me, but maybe you will. If you are interested in this I can provide you with more information on these as well as a few contacts to get you started.
  10. Invest in yourself – You are worth it, and just because something costs money does not always mean it’s a scam or not worth it. There are so many webinars, podcast, and books out there to help you on this journey. Knowledge is power! There are some awesome remote jobs that may require a small investment. As a matter of fact, the transcription job I did was doing insurance claims, I had to buy my equipment. I had to buy a transcription pedal, software, and headphones. Now I would not drop a hundred dollars to a company on things that were not for me. Meaning, if they ask me to sign up for this amazing opportunity for only $100 but I get no products/supplies in return, then NO NO NO red flag. But if you are starting a job and you need tools for yourself to do that job then, by all means, invest in yourself, so that you can do the job the best way possible. Having a work desk, a good computer, a nice chair, and the know-how to do the job you choose are all things that will make the transition into the work at home life easier.

I hope this gets you excited about this new journey you are thinking of taking. I am here to help guide you along the way to your work at home life. I have been living the work at home life for many years. I have had many side hustles in the past 11 years, and have been a work at home mom full time for the past few years. I would love to hear from you and feel free to ask me questions about working at home.
